A large U-shaped TBM has completed the excavation of a 3.3 km single tube railway tunnel in northwest China's Shaanxi Province on January, 2018.The cutting cross section of the U-shape TBM is 10.95 m high and 11.90 m wide. Its shape and design were customized by manufacturer CREG TBM Germany for the construction of the Baicheng Tunnel on the Loess Plateau, where the soil strata is made up of sands. The U-shaped TBMs are very suitable for traffic tunnels in soft ground conditions. Which improves the tunnel space utilization up to 20% and significantly reduce the excavation time and engineering costs in compare with circular cutting TBMs machine.
