Tunnel Saz Machine Co. (TSM) proudly announces the successful completion of a 200-meter Micro Tunnelling (MTBM) project in Nagargata district, West Bengal, India involving a 1600 mm diameter tunnel. This achievement highlights TSM’s expertise in executing complex underground infrastructure projects, demonstrating precision and efficiency in challenging conditions.
The Paradip-Noomaligarh Crude Oil Pipeline Project (PNCPL) is a 1,630 km pipeline connecting Paradip Port in Odisha to Noomaligarh Refinery (NRL) in Assam. It is a vital part of the NRL’s expansion, increasing refining capacity from 3 MMTPA to 9 MMTPA. As a significant North-Eastern India investment under the Indian government’s "Hydrocarbon Vision 2030," NRL (Numaligarh Refinery Limited) is overseeing the project.
To ensure timely completion despite its lengthy timeline, NRL engaged specialized contractors to facilitate efficient execution. This project aimed to strengthen regional energy infrastructure and support economic growth in the northeastern region.
One major challenge of the project was crossing the Gathyia River in Nagargata district, which had complex geological conditions like large boulders and a lack of fine-grained materials. The high potential for wear on cutting tools, along with the risk of the machine becoming stuck or halting during operation, made the construction process more difficult. Specialized techniques were required to ensure successful completion.
Tirupati Cement Products (TCP), contractor for NRL (Numaligarh Refinery Limited), entrusted Tunnel Saz Machine Co. (TSM) based on their proven expertise in complex tunneling. Considering past challenges during execution in similar drives, TSM was selected to manage this critical section, showcasing their capability in handling environmentally sensitive and difficult terrains effectively.
With the active involvement of TSM’s skilled operators, the MTBM was overhauled along with essential tasks, and also, online troubleshooting support was provided from the start of operations. This approach helped minimize stoppages and prevent pressure damage, ensuring smooth progress and the successful completion of this challenging segment.
